167 India according to Marx

When the charter of the East India Company came up for renewal in 1853, Karl Marx became interested in British colonialism and published a series of articles on the subject in the New York Daily Tribune. He included an excerpt from the recent publication Observations on India, written by ‘a resident there many years,’ denoting I. Everett. Marx believed that major changes would be required in Great Britain or India for the Indian people to benefit from the rise of capitalism.
