185 Anton de Kom

Anton de Kom (1898-1945) was one of the most prominent fighters for Surinamese independence, which came about in 1975. In the mid-1920s he started gathering materials for his novel Wij slaven van Suriname. In 1933 a pre-publication appeared in Links Richten, the periodical of the eponymous workers’ and writers’ collective, but the publisher blocked the text, together with other sections, from the book edition of 1934. Links Richten editor Jef Last later gave the impression that he had – almost – been the author.
