184 East Timor
Most remnants of the Portuguese colonial empire became independent following the Carnation Revolution of 1974, but the eastern part of the island Timor was occupied by Indonesia in 1975. The Frente Revolucionária de Timor-Leste Independente (Fretilin), originally formed against Portugal in 1974, organized armed forces that started guerrilla warfare. The struggle, which lasted until the independence in 1999, aroused a lot of sympathy abroad, especially in Australia. This information bulletin is from Darwin, Northern Territory.
