67 Theosophists

Following a meeting with Helena Blavatsky (1831-1891) in 1889, Besant announced (in a pamphlet published by freethinkers) that she was joining the Theosophical Society, of which she became chairwoman in 1908. She abandoned socialism but continued to oppose institutionalized religion and to struggle for the rights of women and colonial subjects. She settled in India, joined the Indian National Congress, and founded the Home Rule League in 1916.
