178, 180 Piet van Staveren
The Rotterdam communist Piet van Staveren (*1925), who as a conscript had resisted deployment to Indonesia but ended up there nonetheless, defected to the republican troops at Yogyakarta in 1947. He changed his name to Pitojo and appealed on radio broadcasts to Dutch soldiers to lay down their arms. He was arrested by Hatta’s government for being a communist and extradited to the Netherlands, where he remained in prison until 1955.
