12 The wealth of nations

The founding father of classical economics was the Scotsman Adam Smith (1723-1790). After a research visit across France and Switzerland, he wrote An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), which is mainly about work. Smith believed that workers were at a disadvantage in collective wage negotiations, because employers – who were after all less numerous – reached agreement amongst one another more easily and moreover had the state on their side.
