62 The Saar region German again
As a consequence of the Treaty of Versailles, the industrialized Saarland was removed from Germany in 1920 and placed under French administration for 15 years, after which the future was to be determined by a referendum. This referendum, held on 13 January 1935, turned into a struggle between supporters and opponents of Hitler’s National-Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, which had come to power in Germany two years before. The NSDAP won by a landslide: 90 percent of the votes cast favoured reunification.
