25 With or without violence
In England revolutionary movements played a less prominent role than on the Continent, but the people developed their own tradition of strikes and demonstrations. Most were peaceful events, but some leaders did not eschew violence, such as the Welshman John Frost (1784-1877), a radical Chartist, who started an uprising in Newport in 1839. He was sentenced to be hanged and quartered, although this was commuted to exile to Tasmania. Following his release, he resumed his agitation.
