71 Teetotallers

This propaganda postcard from the Vereeniging van Geheelonthouders onder Nederlandsch Spoor- en Tramwegpersoneel [Association of teetotallers among Dutch railway and tram workers] was drawn by Henri Pieck (1895-1972), Anton Pieck’s communist twin. The card is from the archive of the Spoorweg Onthouders Vereeniging [Railway teetotallers association], established in 1909 to promote work cafeterias without alcoholic beverages. The struggle against alcoholism, waged by highly divergent sources since the first half of the nineteenth century, was often motivated not merely by health concerns but also on moralizing grounds, invoking arguments that appealed to workers.
