32 Strike is holiday
In England a strong socialist trade union movement arose early on and was clearly visible at the first gathering of the Trades Union Congress in 1868. Back in 1832, the radical preacher William Benbow (1784-1841) had argued that a general strike sustained for only a month would already lead to total political change. He identified this period as a ‘holiday,’ as it was “dedicated to promoting happiness and freedom.”
