39 Sicco Mansholt
The Dutch social-democrat Sicco Mansholt (1908-1995) believed in planned economies, first at the national level, like Jan Tinbergen, and later for Europe as well. In 1958 he resigned from his post as the Dutch minister of agriculture (depicted here in his first television appearance in November 1954 and therefore on a photograph) to become a European commissioner in Brussels, where he drafted a Common Agricultural Policy. In the years before his departure in 1972, he became aware of the environmental problem.
