37 Utopian socialism
Following the February revolution of 1848, Leroux was elected to parliament, where he served until 1851, when the coup by Louis Napoleon forced him into exile. He lived for several years on Jersey, where he befriended his neighbour Victor Hugo. As interest in ‘Utopian’ socialism faded, influenced by ‘scientific’ Marxism, Leroux lapsed into oblivion, slowly resurfacing.
