34 Community art

Actions to introduce the eight-hour working day included decorating the union hall of the ANDB. These premises, which symbolized the success of the union, were designed by H.P. Berlage (1856-1934, also the architect of the stock exchange in Amsterdam) and were completed in 1900. The murals were in the ‘community art’ style of Richard Holand Holst (1868-1938), whose designs included the front of the programme booklet from 1911. The ‘Burcht’ is in Amsterdam, on what is now the Henri Polaklaan.
