Stuart Mill werd niet alleen zo beroemd dat hij na zijn dood op in Berlijn uitgegeven ansichtkaarten verscheen, hij werd ook zeer breed gelezen, zoals de gestempelde band van zijn [i]Principles of Political Economy, with some of their applications to social philosophy[/i] (1842) laat zien. Daarin konden de leden van de Conservative Club in Liverpool bijvoorbeeld lezen over ‘cooperation, or the combination of labour’.
