26 Chartists

The constitutional changes of 1832 in England left people wanting for more. The demand for annual secret elections with universal male suffrage formulated in the People’s Charter in 1838 was conveyed at gatherings that drew massive crowds. Chartism combined divergent movements that were radical to varying degrees, some of which may be regarded as precursors to future labour parties. Petitions were signed by hundreds of thousands, and lists of arrested activists were published, such as this one from 1841.
