44 An utopian mocked

While anarchists were sometimes feared for their acts of violence, they were often mocked for their eccentricity as well. In 1898 on an estate in Bussum the author Frederik van Eeden (1860-1932) founded Walden, after the eponymous book by Henry Thoreau. This co-operative community was based on joint land ownership but failed and was closed in 1907. The social democrat Albert Hahn gloated about this failure in Het Volk.
