42 Emma Goldman

Emma Goldman (1869-1940), born in Russian Lithuania, emigrated in 1885 to the United States, where she became dedicated to the anarchist movement. Together with her lifelong friend Alexander Berkman, she was deported back to Russia at the end of 1919. Although they were at first prepared to support the Bolsheviks, they grew disillusioned and left two years later. Residing in various countries, Goldman became one of the most noted and respected anarchists. Her journey to Toronto irrevocably drew interest from journalists.

Former colleague Rudolf de Jong told me that as a young child he sat on Emma's lap when she visited his parents' house in the Netherlands before the Second World War.
