1 Colonial merchandise
Parchment-bound journal of a Portuguese colonial goods merchant in Antwerp, 1546-1555. His business partners were his cousins Joam and Jorge Rodriguez in Lisbon. Family networks of merchants extended throughout the European trading cities. At the time, Antwerp was the leading trading city in Northwest Europe and Portugal the leading colonial superpower, ahead of Spain. When Antwerp fell in 1585, the commercial centre shifted to Amsterdam.
