50 The 'English Revolution'
The origins of communism are often attributed to the radical movements from the English Revolution, especially to the ranks of the Diggers, known as such for their use of jointly owned plots of land. Gerrard Winstanley (1609-1676) became their spokesman. His New Law of Righteousness derives from the biblical passage: ‘And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.’ (Acts, 2: 44-45).
