Alexander Berkman (1870-1936) en Henry Frick (1849-1919), 23 juli 1892

Berkman werd geboren in Litouwen en emigreerde 1888 naar de VS, waar hij Emma Goldman leerde kennen. Zijn eerste politieke daad in de VS was een moordaanslag op de staalmagnaat Henry Frick. De aanleiding was een bloedig arbeidsconflict in de Homestead Steel Works, Pennsylvania. De aanslag werd uiterst klunzig uitgevoerd. Het eerste schot was niet dodelijk, het tweede miste, bij het derde weigerde de revolver. Frick overleefde en was binnen een week weer aan het werk, Berkman daarentegen sleet veertien jaar in de gevangenis. Daar tekende hij op: 'To be sure, an Attentat on a Frick is in itself splendid propaganda. It combines the value of an example with terroristic effect ... It offers me a rare opportunity for a broader agitation of our ideas. The comrades outside will also use my act for propaganda. The People misunderstand us: they have been prejudiced by the capitalist press. They must be enlightened, that is our glorious task.'
