Slovenians in the Netherlands
Transportation of aid
Transportation of aid
Transportation of aid to Slovenia from South Limburg (1991-1996).
In 1991, following a ten-day war, Slovenia gained independence. In Limburg, collective aid initiatives in collaboration with the local Red Cross and various Caritas organisations in Slovenia followed. Under the name Slovenska Skupnost, Slovenians collected clothing, toys, food and medicine in order to provide help to the many thousands of Croatian and Bosnian refugees who sought refuge in Slovenia. A number of large transportations of aid reached refugee camps in places like Portorož, Jesenice, Ptuj, Velenje and Maribor between 1991 and 1996. These aid initiatives were coordinated by M.J.M. Ashmann, former director of the Limburg Immigration Society (LIS).
