The boycott movement in the Maldives lasted a very long time. This archipelago in the Indian Ocean has been a de facto one-party state under President Maumoon Gayoom from 1978 until 2008. The picture postcard shown here, 'Who cares about the Maldives? Let's go to Spain instead', goes back to 1995. The NGO Friends of the Maldives called for a selective boycott of the resorts that had connections to representatives of Gayoom's regime.
