155 Knowledge about Asia
The VOC treated the knowledge it gathered about Asia as a company secret. François Valentijn (1666-1727), who served the Compagnie as a reverend for years, was among the first to make some of it public in 1724 in Oud en nieuw Oost-Indiën, a history of the VOC. On the plate is Sultan Sibori of Ternate, nicknamed King of Amsterdam, who has just drowned one of his wives. The sultan fell out of favour with the Heren XVII (the VOC board) for organizing an uprising in 1679.
