Dutch Ships
Every year, one or two Dutch ships arrived in Nagasaki to collect and deliver goods and to relieve the staff of the trading post. The arrival of ships was a welcome change in the routine of life on Deshima.
The ships themselves, with their decorated sterns and colorful flags, were quite a sight for the Japanese. Especially impressive were the speed with which sails could be pulled up and down and the powerful cannons that enveloped the ship in smoke when firing a salute.
