In 1978 Argentina hosted the world champion soccer games. The junta under President Videla had governed for two years. In the Netherlands a boycott action was initiated by the cabaret performers Freek de Jonge and Bram Vermeulen. The Dutch government and Parliament preferred not to take a stand.
Holland and Argentina reached the finals, and it was decided that the players had to decide for themselves whether they would accept the cup and gold medals from the dictator himself. The dilemma was easily solved, as Argentina won the cup and the medals for the Dutch were only silver.
