1917-1918: Article Zegepraal on the Russian revolution
In March 1917 Sneevliet published an enthusiastic article in the Dutch East Indies journal De Indiër, titled Zegepraal [Victory], about the successful Russian Revolution as an example to follow for the Javanese people. Because of this article Sneevliet was criminally prosecuted. During the trial Sneevliet defended himself with a nine-hour speech (published in 1918 as Het Proces Sneevliet; De Sociaal-Democratie in Nederlandsch-Indië). The judicial decision was to free Sneevliet. In December 1918 under pressure by the conservative press he was expelled from the Dutch East Indies due to his "subversive" political propaganda and his activities on behalf of seamen and soldiers' councils.
