The Bund Collection
The library of the 'Bund', the Allgemeine Jüdischer Arbeiter-Bund (Bund)/Algemeyne Yidisher Arbeterbund i Lite, Polyn un Rusland, was the first large collection the IISH acquired, even before its official foundation in 1935. The Bund, a Jewish labor and socialist party, was founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1897; in 1898 it played a part in the formation of the Rossijskaja Social-Demokratičeskaja Rabočaja Partija (RSDRP); by 1921 the activities of the Bund came to an end in Russia because of the Bolsheviks' seizure of power; in Poland, the Bund remained an independent political party during the inter-war years. Boris Nikolaevskij, collaborator of the IISH, rescued the collection from Berlin to Paris. The collection contains some 20.000 brochures and pamphlets, often illegal material from the years between 1890 and World War I.
