Turaj Atabaki (), studeerde theoretische fysica (BSc, MSc) en geschiedenis aan de National University of Iran en de University of London. Werkte aan de Universiteit van Utrecht, waar hij zijn MA en PhD behaalde. Bekleed de stoel van "Social History of the Middle East and Central Asia" aan de Afdeling Talen en Culturen van het Midden-Oosten aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Senior-onderzoeker aan het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis, verantwoordelijk voor de afdeling Midden-Oosten en Centraal Azië. Visiting senior research fellow, the Middle East Centre, St. Antony's College, University of Oxford. Visiting fellow at the Academy of Sciences of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Touraj Atabaki is lid van het Academic Committee of the International Institute of Asian Studies and lid van de redactieraad van: Journal of Iranian Studies, Journal of Azerbaijani Studies, Review of International Affairs, Journal of Iran and the Caucasus en Journal Central Asian Survey.
