Extending and combining the HSN database with the LINKS database, demonstrator: Zeeland
HSN has received a grant of € 100,000 seed money from the CLARIAH project (Common Lab for Research in the Arts and Humanities). The project will demonstrate the possibilities of extending and combining the HSN database with the LINKS database for the province of Zeeland. The project started in 2013.
Micro-data on changes in life courses provide a unique insight in how societies change over time. The Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN) collects this kind of data for the Netherlands.
One of the strengths of the HSN database is that it is largely based on municipal population registers. However, this data source has also some weaknesses as some registers are incomplete, do not provide information on the wider kin network of the sampled individuals and sometimes give conflicting information. By combining the information from the HSN with that from another database, called LINKS, we will try to find out whether and how the integration of both databases offers a way to improve the quality and completeness of the HSN database.
LINKS stands for 'Linking System for Historical Family Reconstruction' and aims at the reconstruction of all nineteenth and early twentieth century families in the Netherlands and is based on the existing database of persons found in the Dutch civil certificates.
On 11 September 2013, the new CLARIAH proposal was presented in the Trippenhuis in Amsterdam. To bring out the cornerstones of this proposal a video was made of three projects, including the HLZ.
