In 1989 the initiative of the Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN) was presented to the scientific community. In the first article of this theme issue Jan Kok, Kees Mandemakers and Hilde Bras discuss the development of the database and raise the question to what kind of research the founders of the HSN had in mind and to what extent this has been realized the last twenty years.
