During the years 1991-1995 work on the basic HSN database was financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education & Science. First the HSN pilot project on the 'Utrecht sample' was financed. After the evaluation of this pilot project, other projects extending this sample with birth certificates from the provinces of Zuid Holland and Zeeland were funded.

Following NWO investment subsidies (NWO files nr. 200-01030 and 175-111.000.000) the HSN was and will be able to continue these projects until the year 2003, and to extend the basic database to cover the whole of the Netherlands.

The second subsidy from NWO gave us the possibility to start with the input of marriage certicifates and the input of the first data of the population registers. First registrations, give us a detailed summary of the composition of the household at the moment of birth of the person being researched. Additionally, as a test, more than 3000 persons were researched on complete life histories.
