The Chinese Triads sought to emulate the exemplary brotherhoods that figured in the classical novels Outlaws of the Marsh (also titled Water Margin or All Men Are Brothers) and The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Even illiterate people loved these works thanks to their adaptation to 'operas', which were produced in the open air by travelling performers.
