Title page of one of many editions of the chef-d'oeuvre of the former Jesuit Augustin de Barruel (1741-1820), the most famous source of the conspiracy theory that designated the Enlightenment, Freemasonry, and the Illuminati as the instigators of 'the fall of Throne and Altar'. First published in 1797, the multi-volume work was reprinted, summarized, and translated on a large scale.
