Asia, of naukeurige beschryving van het ryk des grooten Mogols, en een groot gedeelte van Indiën, ... geheel Persië, Georgië, Mengrelië, enz. [Asia, or an accurate description of the Great Mogul Empire, and a large part of the Indies, all of Persia, Georgia, Mengrelia, etc.] / Olfert Dapper. - Amsterdam,
1672
Olfert Dapper (ca. 1635-1689) was a Dutch physician, writer, and Africa expert. Dapper wrote about the history of Amsterdam, as well as about that of African and Asian countries. His books about distant countries were world-renowned in his day and appeared in English, French, and German translations. In Paris a museum dedicated to him exists to this day. The author Willem Frederik Hermans enjoyed visiting it and even wrote a book entitled Het Evangelie van O. Dapper Dapper [The Gospel of O. Dapper Dapper] (1973). Dapper was not a traveller; he never saw the exotic venues featured in his writings. Instead, he derived his data from books written by others and from interviews with merchants and seafarers.
