1682
Jean Baptiste Tavernier, baron d'Aubonne (1605-1689), travelled to Asia many times between 1638 and 1663. He crossed Persia, Mongolia, and large parts of India up to the border with China and visited Celebes, Sumatra, and Batavia. Thanks to his amicable ties with indigenous rulers, he was granted facilities not only to engage in trading but also to take copious notes about the history, geography, industry, monetary system, weights and measures, morals, and customs in the countries he visited. His observations are paragons of accuracy.
