Reizen over Moskovie, door Perzië en Indië [Travels through Muscovia, Persia, and the Indies] / C. de Bruyn. - Amsterdam,
1714
Cornelis de Bruin (also: de Bruyn) (1652-1727) was an artist and painter and an avid traveller since his youth. Nicolaas Witsen (1641-1717), one of those in charge of the United East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC), recognized De Bruin's talents and commissioned him to embark on major journeys funded and facilitated by the VOC. This work describes De Bruin's second great voyage in 1701, via the Russian Empire to Persia and the Indies. De Bruin provided meticulous accounts of the places and areas he visited, including visual depictions of landscapes, cities, and special details, such as folkloric garb and customs, animals, and plants.
