Mon cher ami,

Pardon d'avoir tant tardé à vous écrire et merci de tout c&156;ur.
J'ai été occupée toutes les journées par un projet de traduction de mes Mémoires, qu'un traducteur nommé de Baufort est venu me proposer et qui vient d'aboutir à un traité avec Rives (traité que j'ai montré à Rochefort et qu'il a trouvé très bon). Me voilà donc de l'ouvrage réellement payé, cela finissait par m'ennuyer, toutes ces mauvaises chances, et je suis heureuse de vous signaler celle ci.
Je joins à ma lettre une note pour l'Intransigeant - des bêtises sur moi ayant été inventées par un imbécile du St James Gazette qui disait m'avoir vue allant les yeux hagards, de la gare à Levallois &&&. Vous souvient-il de cet autre animal qui m'avait vue au bois de Boulogne dans le temps du procès des Invalides ?

My dear friend,

I'm sorry to write you so late, and thank you very much.
I have been busy these last days with a project to translate my Mémoires a project suggested by translator named de Baufort. We have just signed a contract with Rives (Rochefort saw and approved it). At least, I received an advance for my work, I began to worry about it, most of the time I am not lucky, and that's why I am happy to give you this pleasant news.
I enclose with this letter an article for l'Intransigeant - a fool from the St James Gazette has spread unpleasant gossip about me. He said he saw me with haggard eyes, walking from the station to Levallois &&&. Do you remember the other idiot who saw me in the Bois de Boulogne when I was busy with the Invalides trial?
